Over 20 women in Savaii, Samoa have powered ahead in their businesses after completing an innovative training program. These determined entrepreneurs are blazing a trail for others as part of a United Nations project aimed at catalyzing women’s economic participation through digital solutions.
The Savaii women have taken their artistic talents online, with most now selling products via social media. This marks a transformation from traditional market stalls. “Their innovative spirit and embrace of technology is truly inspiring,” says Siliniu Lina Chang of coordinating group Samoa Victim Support. “None have needed loans either, proving how empowerment can lift women from victim to victor using only their own savings.”
Dubbed “Star Earners”, the entrepreneurs were once affected by domestic issues but found new purpose. They join 100 other Samoan women trained under the Catalysing Women’s Entrepreneurship Program. Combining creativity with digital skills, the Savaii group show how economic freedom can prevent violence.
The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific backs the initiative. It aims to break down barriers women face in business through projects like this. Goals of no poverty, gender equality, quality jobs and reduced inequality also drive the work. In Savaii, a digital revolution is underway – one woman and product at a time. Their success points the way for others seeking empowerment through entrepreneurship.
