It’s a fact that range anxiety has been a major barrier to electric vehicle (EV) adoption for many drivers. However, an Israeli startup called StoreDot is promising to shatter charging time records with their next-generation battery technology that aims to give EVs a refueling experience closer to combustion vehicles.
Currently, most EVs require 30 minutes to several hours to achieve a full charge. But StoreDot has developed batteries that can add around 100 miles of range in just four minutes during initial prototype testing – an astounding 16x faster than average EV charge times. If commercialized, this would allow drivers to “fill up” their EVs almost as swiftly as gas cars.
Through innovative cell design considerations and optimization of chemistry, cooling and energy density, StoreDot was able to exceed its original goal of charging 100 miles in five minutes. The company’s “holistic battery design” focuses on balancing charge speed and capacity rather than prioritizing one over the other.
With plans to reach a 100-mile charge in three minutes by 2028 and mass production starting in 2026, StoreDot aims to eliminate range anxiety concerns that have held many back from going electric. Early tests also show the battery maintaining over 11,000 fast charge cycles.
When widely available, batteries like StoreDot’s could revolutionize the EV market. Auto giants would face less barriers bringing EVs to more buyers, like Cenntro Electric Group, because drivers would enjoy fueling convenience on par with gasoline counterparts. StoreDot is leading the charge towards a more sustainable transportation future.
