Flai, founded by former HappyRobot engineers and a Netflix data scientist, has raised $4.5 million in seed funding to scale their AI-powered solution designed specifically for automotive retailers.

The company emerged from Y Combinator with a mission to solve a persistent problem plaguing car dealerships nationwide: missed sales opportunities due to busy phone lines and overwhelmed staff. Founded by brothers Ari and Alen Polakof, along with former Netflix data scientist Juan Alzugaray, Flai represents a growing trend of startups applying AI car dealership software to modernize automotive retail operations.

Building Solutions from the Ground Up

Unlike many competitors using existing voice technology platforms, Flai has developed its entire system from scratch. The startup’s omni-channel approach handles multiple communication methods, including phone calls through voice agents and written correspondence via large language models for emails and text messages.

CEO Ari Polakof described the unusual development process, which involved spending countless hours directly at dealership locations. Instead of developing their AI car dealership software from comfortable Silicon Valley offices, the team embedded themselves in actual service bays and dealership back offices to understand real-world challenges.

“Very noisy, impossible to concentrate,” Polakof recalled about working alongside mechanics in service areas. This hands-on approach involved visiting approximately 400 dealerships during their initial development phase, allowing the team to train their AI systems with authentic data and feedback.

Earlier this year, another Y Combinator-backed company called Toma raised $17 million from notable investors including a16z and automotive industry influencer Yossi Levi. Polakof believes there’s ample room for multiple players in this space, pointing to thousands of car dealerships and service centers across the United States facing similar operational challenges. The recent $4.5 million seed round was led by Liz Wessel at First Round Capital, with additional participation from Y Combinator, RedBlue Capital, Joe Montana’s Liquid 2 Ventures, and Innovation Endeavors. This funding will help Flai expand their operations while maintaining their lean organizational structure.

The startup’s approach differs from typical Silicon Valley scaling strategies. Rather than rapidly expanding their workforce, the three-person team plans to maintain their focused approach, emphasizing efficiency over headcount growth. Polakof stated they want to “work as smart as we can” rather than building a large team immediately.

Flai’s success stems partly from their unconventional sales strategy. While many startups rely on cold calling, email campaigns, or conference networking, Flai’s team spent extensive time visiting brick-and-mortar dealership locations directly. Polakof noted that this direct engagement approach would be difficult for larger, more established companies to replicate due to resource constraints and organizational structure.
