ChatGPT’s AI-Generated Studio Ghibli Art highlight AI copyright concerns

A new feature in ChatGPT has taken the internet by storm, allowing users to transform photos and memes into the iconic style of Studio Ghibli. While fans rejoice, the trend raises important questions about AI’s impact on copyright and artistic integrity.

The AI tool, developed by OpenAI, has captivated users worldwide with its ability to recreate images in the whimsical style of Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved animations. From personal pet photos to viral memes, the internet has been flooded with Ghibli-inspired creations.

Janu Lingeswaran, an entrepreneur from Germany, shared his experience using the tool to transform a photo of his cat, Mali. “I really fell in love with the result,” he said, highlighting the appeal of this new technology.

However, the trend has reignited debates about AI’s role in art and animation. Miyazaki himself has previously expressed strong reservations about AI in animation, describing a demonstration he witnessed as “an insult to life itself.”

Legal experts are also weighing in on the potential copyright implications. Josh Weigensberg, a partner at Pryor Cashman, pointed out that while “style” itself may not be copyrightable, specific elements from Ghibli films could be protected.

Artist Karla Ortiz, currently involved in a lawsuit against AI image generators, criticized OpenAI’s approach. “It’s an insult. It’s exploitation,” she stated, emphasizing concerns about the impact on artists’ livelihoods.

The controversy escalated when even the White House joined the trend, using a Ghibli-style image for political messaging. This move further fueled the debate about the ethical use of AI-generated art.

As the trend continues to grow, it remains to be seen how Studio Ghibli and the animation industry at large will respond to this new frontier of AI-generated art.
