An AI-powered English learning platform focused on spoken skills has received $2 million in seed funding to further develop its technology and expand its reach. Fluently, which uses artificial intelligence to analyze recordings of real conversations and provide personalized feedback, aims to help the large number of non-native speakers already proficient in writing but still striving to speak fluently.
Founded by entrepreneurs who themselves sought to take their English to the next level, Fluently allows users to record phone or video calls and receive insights on improving understandability, pronunciation, vocabulary, pacing and more. Its AI “coaches” also provide practice conversations to help hone skills in everyday chat or mock job interviews.
While various resources exist for English learners, finding assistance tailored for near-native competence has proven difficult. Seeing this gap, Fluently secured support from investors to build out its product. The funding round was led by Pioneer Fund with participation from SID Venture Partners and angel backers.
Leveraging machine learning expertise from internships at major tech firms, the startup’s small team is focused on personalized feedback delivered seamlessly. Early access reveals guidance even on subtle nuances, like enunciating “computer.” With most members engineering specialists, Fluently takes a tech-first approach to an education field usually led by teaching professionals.
Privacy is also a priority, with audio stored locally and third parties receiving only anonymous data. The $25 monthly subscription will support new features, like tracking progress over time. For the sizeable population constantly upgrading their skills in English-centered workplaces, Fluently hopes to become the go-to solution.
