Swedish Startup “Modvion” Constructs World’s Tallest Wooden Wind Towers

A Swedish renewable energy startup is making waves in the industry with their innovative wooden wind turbines. Modvion has constructed the tallest wooden wind tower yet at 150 meters, helping to drive the shift to more sustainable power sources.

Traditional steel towers require heavy carbon footprints to manufacture and transport. But Modvion’s wooden design is assembled modularly using locally-sourced wood, reducing emissions by up to 90%. Their lightweight construction also lowers costs compared to steel over the lifespan.

The breakthrough tower near Gothenburg supports a 2MW turbine, sufficient to power around 400 homes cleanly. Made from strong laminated spruce, it can withstand the elements for decades without maintenance. When decommissioned, the wood may find new use in construction.

Modvion estimates their design cuts the carbon from wind power by 30% per kWh generated. As demand grows for emissions reductions in energy, their scalable wooden solutions could help wind power achieve net-zero status. Positioned to disrupt entrenched steel, Modvion is championing greener giants to accelerate Sweden’s transition to renewable energy.
